Study Area Overview

What is Environmental Science?

Understanding the discipline before you commit to studying it.

Environmental Science is the study of the natural world and how human activity affects it. It is a broad, interdisciplinary field that draws on biology, chemistry, physics, geography, ecology, and social science to understand environmental problems — and find solutions to them.

Unlike pure biology or chemistry, Environmental Science takes a systems-thinking approach. Students learn how air, water, land, and living organisms interact as connected systems, and how activities like pollution, deforestation, agriculture, mining, and urbanisation disturb those systems. The degree then focuses on how to measure, manage, and repair that damage — and how to design policies, technologies, and practices that prevent it in the first place.

In simple terms: Environmental Scientists identify what is wrong with our planet and work out how to fix it. In an era of climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, and plastic pollution, this is one of the most important and fastest-growing fields of study in the world.

🔬 What You Will Study

Ecology, climate science, environmental chemistry, pollution monitoring, water and soil science, GIS and remote sensing, biodiversity conservation, environmental law and policy, sustainability, and environmental impact assessment.

👤 Who This Degree Is For

Students who care about the planet and want to turn that passion into a professional career. Ideal for those who enjoyed Biology, Chemistry, Geography, or Earth Science at school. Also excellent for students who want to combine science with policy, law, or business in an environmental context.

🔗 Related Fields

Ecology, Conservation Biology, Climate Science, Environmental Engineering, Geography, Earth Science, Marine Science, Forestry, Sustainability Management, and Environmental Law and Policy.

📈 Why It Matters Now

Climate change, biodiversity collapse, plastic pollution, water crises, and deforestation are no longer future problems — they are present realities. Governments, corporations, and international bodies are under increasing pressure to respond, and they need qualified Environmental Scientists to do it. Job demand in this field is growing rapidly globally.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions students and parents most commonly ask before choosing an Environmental Science degree.

What subjects do I need at school to study Environmental Science?
Most universities accept students with a strong background in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, or Earth Science at school level — A-Levels, HSC, Year 12, or equivalent. Some programmes lean more towards biology while others lean towards chemistry or physical geography, so check each university’s specific requirements. Advanced Mathematics is generally not required for Environmental Science, though it is helpful for specialisations like GIS, climate modelling, or hydrology.
Is Environmental Science a good degree for the future?
Yes — and arguably one of the best degrees for the future. Climate change, biodiversity loss, water crises, pollution, and the global push for net-zero emissions are creating enormous and sustained demand for qualified Environmental Scientists. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7% growth in environmental science roles between 2024–2034. Corporate ESG requirements, government climate legislation, and the clean energy transition are all adding new roles that did not exist a decade ago.
What is the difference between Environmental Science and Environmental Engineering?
Environmental Science focuses on understanding, measuring, and managing environmental problems — it is more analytical and science-based. Environmental Engineering focuses on designing and building technical solutions — water treatment systems, pollution control equipment, waste management infrastructure. If you prefer science, data, fieldwork, and policy, choose Environmental Science. If you prefer engineering design and construction, choose Environmental Engineering. Both have excellent career prospects.
Can I work in corporate sustainability with an Environmental Science degree?
Yes, absolutely. Corporate sustainability and ESG is one of the fastest-growing career areas for Environmental Science graduates. Companies across every sector — banking, mining, retail, real estate, manufacturing — now employ sustainability managers, ESG analysts, and carbon reporting specialists. An Environmental Science degree combined with knowledge of GRI standards, ISO 14001, and ESG reporting frameworks is highly attractive to corporate employers. Many universities now offer sustainability management electives within their environmental science programmes for exactly this reason.
Do I need a Master’s degree to get a good job in Environmental Science?
Not always. A Bachelor’s degree is sufficient for most environmental consulting, field monitoring, and government compliance roles. However, for research positions, senior policy roles, climate science, and specialist technical areas like GIS or hydrology, a Master’s or PhD is often preferred or required. A Master’s degree typically leads to faster career progression and higher starting salaries in this field, and many environmental consulting firms specifically target MSc graduates for graduate programmes.
Is there a visa pathway to stay and work after completing an Environmental Science degree abroad?
Yes, in most study destinations. Australia (2–4 years PSWV), Canada (up to 3 years PGWP), New Zealand (up to 3 years PSWV), and UK (2 years Graduate Route) all provide substantial post-study work periods. Environmental Science and conservation roles appear on skilled occupation lists in Australia and New Zealand, making it easier to transition to Permanent Residency. In the USA, 3-year OPT is available for STEM-classified environmental science programmes.
Are there scholarships available for Environmental Science students?
Yes. Several scholarships specifically target environmental and sustainability students. Wageningen University offers the Orange Tulip Scholarship and NFP Scholarship for non-EU students. Australia Awards provide full scholarships for students from developing Pacific and Asian countries. The UNEP offers fellowships and internships for students working on environmental topics. Many universities also offer faculty-specific scholarships for environmental programmes, and research-based Master’s at Canadian and US universities often come with stipends that cover tuition and living costs.
