About the programme
What is Sports Science?
When you study sports science abroad, you learn how the human body responds to exercise and how to measure, train and improve performance and health. Degrees combine exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, nutrition, motor control and strength and conditioning with hands-on lab testing and placements in clubs, academies and clinics. In North America the equivalent degree is often called kinesiology or exercise science.
Location shapes your opportunities. The UK and Australia have dense networks of professional clubs, national institutes of sport and accredited degrees, while the USA offers collegiate athletics and large sports medicine programmes. Australia also has a regulated clinical career as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Professional bodies also differ, so check which accreditation employers expect in your target country.
Sports science suits students who enjoy biology and data as much as sport. Many graduates use it as a springboard into physiotherapy, dietetics, medicine or teaching through further study. A strong portfolio of placements, coaching and volunteering is often as important as grades.

Types of courses
Types of courses to study Sports Science abroad.
From short diplomas to doctoral research, here is how Sports Science qualifications are structured across major study destinations.
Diploma / Certificate
Fitness, coaching or sport development certificates and diplomas, such as personal training qualifications, which lead to gym roles and can articulate into a degree.
Bachelor’s degree
BSc Sport and Exercise Science, Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science or BKin with lab work and placements, often endorsed by BASES or accredited by ESSA.
Master’s degree
MSc Sport and Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or Sports Performance focusing on applied research, testing and athlete monitoring in elite settings.
Specialist master’s (Clinical Exercise / S&C)
Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology in Australia or MSc Strength and Conditioning in the UK, leading to accredited clinical or high-performance practitioner roles.
Professional certifications
NSCA CSCS, UKSCA accreditation, ACSM certifications, BASES supervised experience, ESSA accreditation and CSEP clinical exercise physiologist status, each valued by employers.
Accreditation & recognition
Sports Science accreditation and professional bodies.
Sports science is less regulated than medicine or physiotherapy, so accreditation is how employers judge quality. When you study abroad, choose a degree endorsed by bodies such as BASES, ESSA or CAAHEP so that you can progress to recognised practitioner status, clinical roles or high-performance jobs in professional sport.
| Body / accreditation | Where it counts | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| BASES | United Kingdom | British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Endorses degrees and accredits sport and exercise scientists through supervised experience. |
| ESSA | Australia | Exercise & Sports Science Australia. Accredits university courses and practitioners, including Accredited Exercise Physiologists recognised by Medicare and health insurers. |
| ACSM | USA and international | American College of Sports Medicine. Offers widely recognised exercise physiologist and personal trainer certifications, and its guidelines shape exercise prescription. |
| NSCA | USA and international | National Strength and Conditioning Association. Awards the CSCS, the most common credential for strength and conditioning coaches worldwide. |
| CSEP | Canada | Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. Certifies personal trainers and clinical exercise physiologists working with clients across Canada. |
| UKSCA | United Kingdom | UK Strength and Conditioning Association. Accredits strength and conditioning coaches through a practical assessment widely required by UK professional sport. |
| CAAHEP (CoAES) | United States | Accredits US exercise science programmes through its Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences, signalling ACSM-aligned curricula. |
Current trends
What is shaping Sports Science right now.
- Data and wearables drive performance. GPS trackers, force plates and athlete management systems are standard in professional sport, so graduates with data analysis, coding and visualisation skills are preferred for sports scientist roles.
- Gulf sport investment is booming. Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, the Saudi Pro League, Qatar’s Aspire Academy and UAE events are hiring performance staff, making the GCC attractive for students who study sports science abroad.
- Exercise is becoming medicine. Health systems are using exercise for diabetes, cancer, heart disease and mental health, expanding clinical exercise physiology careers, especially in Australia, Canada and the UK.
- Women’s sport is professionalising. Rapid growth in women’s football, cricket and rugby is creating new performance, medical and sports science roles, along with research into female athlete physiology and health.
- Healthy ageing and workplace wellness grow. Ageing populations and employer wellness programmes are opening jobs in falls prevention, strength training for older adults and corporate health well beyond elite sport and professional clubs.

The next decade
Scope of Sports Science over the next 10 years.
What the structural shifts in the field mean for graduates entering it now.
- Sport keeps professionalising. More clubs, leagues and national programmes are building multidisciplinary performance teams, so graduates who study sports science abroad with recognised accreditation and practical experience will find more full-time roles.
- Clinical exercise is the fastest-growing field. Chronic disease, ageing and mental health are driving demand for exercise physiologists and rehabilitation specialists, offering more stable careers than elite sport roles alone in most countries.
- Technology skills set candidates apart. Coding in Python or R, managing athlete data and using wearables, motion capture and AI video analysis will increasingly separate shortlisted candidates from the rest.
- Further study unlocks higher pay. Many graduates progress to physiotherapy, dietetics, medicine or a PhD, so choosing a degree with the right prerequisites keeps higher-paying regulated careers within reach after graduation.
Frequently asked
FAQs: study Sports Science abroad.
Which country is best to study sports science abroad?
The UK is widely considered the best, with Loughborough, Bath and Birmingham offering top facilities and links to professional sport. Australia is excellent for ESSA-accredited degrees and clinical exercise physiology, and the USA and Canada are ideal for kinesiology as a route into physiotherapy or medicine. The Netherlands suits research-focused students.
Which country has the best sports science jobs and PR prospects?
Australia offers the best mix of jobs and migration options, especially for Accredited Exercise Physiologists. The UK has the largest professional sport job market, and Canada combines kinesiology roles with Express Entry. Saudi Arabia and the UAE pay well tax-free due to sport investment but rely on employer-sponsored visas.
Is sports science a good career and worth studying abroad?
It can be, but elite sport roles are competitive and entry pay is modest. Studying abroad is worth it when your degree is accredited, includes placements and builds data skills, or when you use it as a pathway to physiotherapy, exercise physiology or dietetics, which pay more and are in higher demand.
How much do sports scientists earn abroad?
Indicative 2025–26 starting salaries are GBP 24–30K in the UK, AUD 65–78K in Australia, USD 45–60K in the US, CAD 45–58K in Canada and AED 96–144K tax-free in the UAE. Heads of performance at professional clubs and senior exercise physiologists can earn USD 90–140K or more.
What are the entry requirements to study sports science abroad?
Bachelor’s degrees usually require Year 12 with biology, PE or another science, and sometimes maths, plus IELTS 6.0–6.5. Top UK programmes ask for high grades. Master’s degrees need a sport, exercise or life science bachelor’s, and clinical exercise physiology programmes require specific prerequisite subjects for accreditation.
Will AI replace sports scientists?
AI is automating video tagging, load monitoring and report generation, but coaches and athletes still rely on sports scientists to interpret data, design programmes and communicate decisions. Graduates who can use AI-driven analytics and explain results clearly will be in higher demand, not lower, over the coming decade.
What is the difference between sports science and physiotherapy?
Sports science focuses on optimising performance and health through exercise, testing and training, while physiotherapy is a regulated health profession that diagnoses and treats injuries and illness. Many students complete a sports science degree first and then a two-year pre-registration physiotherapy master’s in the UK or Australia.
