About the programme

What is Philosophy?

When you study philosophy abroad, you tackle fundamental questions about what we can know, how we should live, what makes actions right, how minds relate to bodies and what makes a society just. Degrees train you in formal logic, close reading and argument, combining core areas such as ethics, epistemology, metaphysics and philosophy of mind with options in political philosophy, philosophy of science, AI ethics and the history of philosophy.

Philosophy is not a licensed profession, so the department’s reputation, teaching style and the doors your degree opens matter most. UK universities use tutorial and seminar teaching and offer popular PPE degrees; US liberal arts colleges let you combine philosophy with economics or computer science; KU Leuven and Dutch universities offer affordable English-taught programmes; and the ANU in Australia is a major research centre.

Philosophy suits curious, independent thinkers who enjoy debate and writing. It is excellent preparation for law, policy and consulting, and for roles in AI ethics and trust and safety, but you will need internships or a further qualification to target a specific career.

Accreditation & recognition

Philosophy accreditation and professional bodies.

Philosophy degrees are not professionally accredited, so recognition rests on university quality, research reputation and how well your degree is understood by employers and graduate schools. When studying abroad, check that your degree is recognised at home, that it qualifies you for further study such as law conversion or teacher training, and how the department is regarded in your areas of interest.

Current trends

What is shaping Philosophy right now.

  • AI ethics needs philosophers. Rapid AI adoption and laws such as the EU AI Act are creating roles in AI ethics, governance, policy and trust and safety, where training in ethics and argument is directly valued.
  • PPE and joint degrees lead demand. Students increasingly combine philosophy with economics, politics, computer science or psychology, and joint degrees improve employability while keeping philosophy’s reasoning strengths.
  • Philosophy as a route to law. In England and Wales, the SQE lets graduates of any discipline qualify as solicitors, and philosophy remains a popular pre-law degree in the US, Canada and Australia.
  • Experimental and applied philosophy. Departments are expanding experimental philosophy, bioethics, philosophy of cognitive science and climate ethics, connecting philosophy with labs, hospitals and policy research.
  • Affordable European options. KU Leuven, Dutch and German universities offer English-taught philosophy at modest tuition, giving students who study philosophy abroad a lower-cost alternative to UK and US degrees.

The next decade

Scope of Philosophy over the next 10 years.

What the structural shifts in the field mean for graduates entering it now.

  • Ethics becomes a job function. Over the next decade, AI, biotechnology and climate policy will keep creating roles in ethics, governance and compliance, giving students who study philosophy abroad a direct route into emerging careers.
  • Skills that resist automation. Clear reasoning, careful writing, handling ambiguity and evaluating arguments are hard to automate and increasingly valued as AI produces more content that needs critical scrutiny.
  • Conversion routes stay strong. Law, teaching, public policy and consulting will remain the most reliable destinations, so graduates who plan a second step such as the SQE, a JD or a PGCE early tend to earn the most.
  • Academic market stays tight. Permanent university posts in philosophy remain scarce worldwide, so PhD students should build teaching, applied ethics and policy experience to keep non-academic options open.

Frequently asked

FAQs: study Philosophy abroad.

Which country is best to study philosophy abroad?

The UK and USA host most of the world’s top-ranked philosophy departments, from Oxford and St Andrews to NYU and Rutgers, with the UK best for one-year master’s and PPE and the US for funded PhDs. Belgium’s KU Leuven and Dutch universities offer affordable English-taught programmes, and Australia’s ANU is a leading research centre. Choose by specialism and budget.

Which country has the best jobs for philosophy graduates?

The UK, USA and Canada offer the most opportunities in law, policy, consulting and tech ethics, with the US paying highest. In England, the SQE lets philosophy graduates qualify as solicitors without a law degree. Singapore and the Netherlands are growing hubs for policy and AI governance. Long-term visas depend on employer sponsorship, as philosophy is not a shortage occupation.

Is a philosophy degree worth it?

Yes, if you are clear about your next step. Philosophy builds rigorous reasoning, writing and argument skills prized in law, policy, consulting and tech ethics, and philosophy students perform well on law and graduate admissions tests. It is not vocational, so pairing it with internships, a joint degree or a conversion qualification makes it far more valuable.

What salary can I earn after I study philosophy abroad?

Indicative 2025–26 starting salaries are GBP 25–32K in the UK, USD 45–60K in the US and AUD 65–80K in Australia, but pay depends heavily on career. Lawyers, consultants and AI governance specialists can exceed USD 100K mid-career, while academic, charity and publishing roles typically pay less.

What are the entry requirements for philosophy degrees abroad?

Bachelor’s degrees need strong Year 12 results, ideally in essay-based subjects, with IELTS 6.5–7.0; Oxford, Cambridge and LSE ask for top grades and may set admissions tests or interviews. Master’s programmes usually require a philosophy background and a writing sample. Maths is not essential for philosophy, but it helps with logic and is often expected for PPE.

Will AI replace philosophy graduates?

AI can draft essays and summarise arguments, but it cannot take responsibility for judgements, reliably spot subtle flaws or decide which values should guide technology. Demand is rising for people who can evaluate AI outputs, design ethical frameworks and reason about regulation, making philosophy skills more relevant, not less.

Can I study law after a philosophy degree?

Yes, and it is one of the most common routes. In England and Wales, you can take the PGDL or prepare directly for the SQE to qualify as a solicitor. In the US and Canada, philosophy is a popular pre-law major before a JD, and in Australia graduates can take a Juris Doctor. Logic and ethics modules give strong preparation for legal reasoning.
