Law abroad: the quick answer.

A law degree abroad lets you qualify in a common-law system such as England and Wales, the USA, Canada, Australia or Singapore, or specialise through an LLM. Newly qualified lawyers typically earn GBP 35K–50K regionally, while top US and City firms pay USD 200K+ from year one.

About the programme

What is Law?

A law degree abroad comes in three main forms. The LLB is an undergraduate law degree used in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The JD is a three-year graduate-entry professional degree in the USA and Canada, also offered in Australia. The LLM is a one-year master’s for law graduates who want to specialise in areas such as international commercial law, arbitration, tax or technology law, but on its own it rarely qualifies you to practise.

Admission rules decide your career. England and Wales now qualify solicitors through SQE1, SQE2 and two years of qualifying work experience, while barristers complete the Bar course and pupillage. In the US, you sit a state bar exam after an ABA-accredited JD, though New York and California allow some foreign-trained lawyers with an LLM to sit. Canada assesses foreign degrees through the NCA, and Australia requires Practical Legal Training before admission.

Think about home-country rules too. Indian graduates with a foreign LLB must usually clear the Bar Council of India’s qualifying examination before enrolling as advocates, and many Gulf courts restrict advocacy to nationals, so international lawyers often work as legal consultants or in-house counsel.

Types of courses

Types of courses to study Law abroad.

From short diplomas to doctoral research, here is how Law qualifications are structured across major study destinations.

Diploma / Certificate

⏱ 6–12 months🎓 Year 12 or degree in another subject

Paralegal diplomas, foundation years and the UK Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) provide legal grounding; they lead to paralegal work or onward study, not admission.

Bachelor’s degree

⏱ 3–4 years (2 years graduate-entry)🎓 High school with strong English; IELTS 6.5–7.0; LNAT at some UK universities

The LLB covers the foundational subjects required for admission in the UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ and Singapore; double degrees with commerce or arts are common in Australia.

Master’s degree

⏱ 1 year (LLM)🎓 Law degree with around 55–65%+; IELTS 7.0

LLM programmes specialise in commercial, international, human rights, tax, IP or technology law; US LLMs can unlock New York or California bar eligibility if courses meet state rules.

JD (Juris Doctor)

⏱ 3 years (US, Canada); 3 years (AU)🎓 Bachelor’s in any subject; LSAT for US and Canada

The graduate-entry professional law degree in North America, required for most US state bars, and an alternative to the LLB in Australia.

Professional certifications

⏱ 6 months–2 years🎓 Qualifying law degree or equivalent

SQE1/SQE2 plus QWE (England), Bar Course and pupillage, US state bar exams, NCA exams and articling, Australian PLT, NZ Professionals course and Singapore Part B.

Accreditation & recognition

Law accreditation and professional bodies.

Law is regulated country by country, so a law degree abroad only leads to practice where its regulator recognises it. The SRA, US state bars, Canada’s NCA, Australian admission boards and Singapore’s SILE each set their own rules, and India’s Bar Council requires extra steps for foreign degrees. Before enrolling, decide where you want to be admitted and work backwards.

Body / accreditationWhere it countsWhy it matters
Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)England and WalesRegulates solicitors through the SQE route: a degree in any subject, SQE1 and SQE2, two years’ qualifying work experience and character checks; foreign lawyers can sit the SQE.
Bar Standards BoardEngland and WalesRegulates barristers; qualification requires an academic stage, a vocational Bar course, Inn of Court membership and pupillage.
ABA and US state bars (NCBE)United StatesABA accredits JD programmes; each state admits lawyers. New York and California allow some foreign-educated lawyers to sit with a qualifying LLM; NCBE’s NextGen bar exam is being phased in.
FLSC National Committee on Accreditation (NCA)CanadaAssesses foreign law degrees and assigns challenge exams; candidates then complete provincial licensing, such as Law Society of Ontario exams plus articling or the Law Practice Program.
Admission boards (LPAB, VLAB) and LACC standardsAustraliaState admission authorities require an accredited law degree covering the Priestley 11 subjects plus Practical Legal Training; overseas lawyers are assessed individually.
Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE)SingaporeSets Part A (for approved overseas law graduates), Part B and practice training, and runs the Foreign Practitioner Examinations for foreign lawyers.
Bar Council of India (BCI)IndiaIndian citizens with foreign law degrees generally must pass BCI’s qualifying examination to enrol as advocates; a foreign LLM alone does not confer the right to practise in India.

Current trends

What is shaping Law right now.

  • The SQE has opened England’s profession: Because the SQE accepts any degree and some overseas lawyers can claim exemptions, more international students now choose a law degree abroad in the UK as a direct route to solicitor qualification.
  • US bar exam is changing: NCBE’s NextGen bar exam is being adopted by states from 2026, and several states have tightened or reviewed foreign-LLM eligibility, so check rules each admissions cycle.
  • Legal technology and AI: Generative AI tools for research, review and drafting are now common in large firms, and LLMs in law and technology, data protection and AI regulation are growing fast.
  • Arbitration hubs grow in Asia and the Gulf: Singapore, Hong Kong, DIFC and ADGM are expanding as dispute centres, boosting demand for arbitration, construction and energy lawyers with common-law training.
  • Foreign firms in India: BCI rules now allow foreign lawyers and firms to practise foreign and international law in India on a reciprocal basis, adding cross-border roles for Indian graduates with foreign qualifications.

The next decade

Scope of Law over the next 10 years.

What the structural shifts in the field mean for graduates entering it now.

  • Steady demand, uneven access: Legal employment grows steadily, but graduates with a law degree abroad succeed fastest when they qualify locally, through the SQE, a state bar, NCA licensing or Australian admission.
  • AI changes junior work: Document review, first-draft research and due diligence are increasingly automated, so trainees will be expected to supervise AI outputs and add judgement and client skills earlier.
  • Regulation creates new practice areas: AI regulation, data protection, sanctions, ESG disclosure and crypto-asset rules are expanding fast, creating demand for lawyers who combine legal and technical understanding.
  • Cross-border practice rises: Arbitration in Singapore and the Gulf, reciprocal opening of India’s legal market and mutual recognition schemes will reward lawyers holding more than one qualification.

Frequently asked

FAQs: study Law abroad.

Which country is best for a law degree abroad?

The UK is the best all-round choice for a law degree abroad: three-year LLBs or one-year LLMs, a common-law system used worldwide, and the SQE route open to international students. The USA is best for those who can commit to a three-year JD and US bar admission, Canada suits JD and NCA candidates, and Australia offers PLT-based admission with good migration prospects.

Which country has the best jobs and PR options for law graduates?

Australia and Canada offer the clearest residence pathways once you are admitted or licensed, and solicitors appear on Australia’s skilled lists. The UK offers the most accessible large legal market through the SQE and Skilled Worker sponsorship. The USA pays most but relies on the H-1B lottery, while the UAE offers tax-free legal consultant roles without permanent residence.

Is a law degree abroad worth it?

It is worth it if you plan your admission route first. A foreign LLB or LLM can open doors to international firms, arbitration and in-house roles, but it does not automatically let you practise anywhere. The best returns come from qualifying where you study, such as the SQE in England or bar admission in a US state, or from a recognised LLM that boosts an existing qualification.

How much do lawyers earn abroad?

Salaries vary widely by firm type. Newly qualified solicitors earn about GBP 35K–50K regionally in the UK but GBP 120K+ at top City firms; US large-firm associates start around USD 225K, while public-interest roles start nearer USD 60K–75K. Australian graduate lawyers typically earn AUD 70K–90K, and Gulf legal consultants receive tax-free packages.

What are the entry requirements for a law degree abroad?

LLB programmes usually require strong high school grades, especially in English and essay subjects, plus IELTS 6.5–7.0; some UK universities set the LNAT. US and Canadian JDs need a bachelor’s in any subject and the LSAT. LLMs usually ask for a law degree with around 55–65%+ and IELTS 7.0. Advanced maths is not required, but careful reasoning is essential.

Will AI replace lawyers?

AI will automate parts of legal work, especially document review, research summaries and contract first drafts, which reduces some junior tasks. It does not replace legal accountability, advocacy, negotiation or advice on client risk. Firms increasingly want lawyers who can use AI tools safely, check their outputs and understand confidentiality and professional conduct rules.

Can I practise in India with a foreign law degree?

Not directly. Under Bar Council of India rules, Indian citizens with a foreign law degree generally must pass BCI’s qualifying examination and meet its conditions before enrolling with a State Bar Council as an advocate. A one-year foreign LLM does not by itself qualify you to practise in India. Separate BCI rules now let registered foreign lawyers advise on foreign and international law in India on a reciprocal basis.
