What are QS rankings?
The world's most trusted
university ranking.
The QS World University Rankings are published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds, a British higher education analytics company. The 2026 edition ranks over 1,500 universities across more than 100 countries — making it the most widely referenced ranking system globally.
For international students, the QS ranking is often the first reference point when shortlisting universities in Australia, UK, USA, Canada or New Zealand. A higher rank generally signals stronger academic reputation, better employer recognition, and a more internationally connected campus.
However, QS rank alone doesn't tell the full story. Australia, for example, uses its own Assessment Level system (Level 1–5) alongside QS rankings to evaluate student visa risk — and a university ranked #250 may be equally excellent for your specific course and career pathway. Fee ranges, scholarship availability, and post-study work rights matter just as much.
On Coursefind, every course listing shows the university's QS ranking alongside fees, IELTS requirements, intake dates and scholarship tags — so you can compare everything in one search.

Using QS rankings
How to use QS rankings
to choose your university.
QS rank is a useful signal — but it's only one part of the picture. Here's how to use it wisely.
Check the overall QS rank.
The global rank tells you how a university compares across academic reputation, employer recognition, research output, and international diversity. Top 100 is excellent; Top 500 is still globally recognised.
Search ranked universitiesLook at subject rankings.
QS publishes separate rankings by subject — Nursing, Engineering, Business, Law, Computer Science, and more. A #300-ranked university can be #40 globally for your specific subject. This matters more than the overall rank.
Search by subjectCheck fees and entry requirements.
A higher-ranked university isn't always worth the extra cost. Compare annual tuition, IELTS requirements, scholarship availability, and total cost of living — all visible on every Coursefind course card.
Compare courses and feesFactor in post-study work rights.
In Australia, regional campuses of well-ranked universities give 4 years post-study visa instead of 2 — a major advantage for PR. In Canada, PGWP length matches your program. These pathways matter as much as QS rank for your long-term goals.
Explore work rights by countryAustralia visa context
QS rank vs. Assessment Level:
what matters for your visa.
Australia doesn't use QS rankings for student visa decisions — it uses its own 5-tier Assessment Level system. A university's level directly affects your documentation requirements and visa approval chances.
⚠️ Assessment levels are set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs and can change annually. Always verify before applying. QS band ranges shown are indicative — not official government data.

Common questions
QS rankings — answered.
Everything students ask us about QS rankings, university choice, and how rankings affect visas and career outcomes.
The QS World University Rankings 2026 are published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) and rank over 1,500 universities globally. The ranking uses 8 metrics — with academic reputation (40%) and employer reputation (10%) carrying the most weight. The 2026 edition continues to be the most widely referenced university ranking system among international students, universities, and employers worldwide.
The United States has the most QS Top 100 universities (27), followed by the UK (17), China (7), Australia (7), Germany (5), and Canada (6). However, for international students, the number of ranked universities is less important than how a specific university's courses align with your academic background, career goals, IELTS score, and budget. Use Coursefind to search by country and subject.
Not directly — it depends on the country. In Australia, visa difficulty is determined by Assessment Level (1–5), not QS rank. However, Group of Eight universities (all QS Top 100) are all Level 1 — lowest scrutiny. In the UK, USA, and Canada, QS rank doesn't directly affect the visa process, but a well-ranked university provides stronger justification in your student visa application for "why this institution."
Often yes. QS publishes separate subject rankings for 55+ disciplines — Nursing, Engineering, Computer Science, Business, Law, Medicine, and more. A university ranked #300 overall might rank #40 globally in Nursing. Subject rankings are more relevant for career outcomes, employer recognition, and professional body accreditation. Always check both. QS Subject Rankings are available at topuniversities.com.

Top QS-ranked universities (especially Top 100) often open doors faster at competitive graduate employers — particularly in finance, consulting, technology, and law firms that recruit through structured graduate programs. However, for most healthcare, engineering, construction, and education roles, professional registration and work experience matter more than university QS rank. The right answer depends entirely on which field and which country you intend to work in after graduation.
